What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autologous (your own self product) concentrated preparation of platelets and the associated growth factors in a small volume of plasma (fluid in your blood.) Platelets are a natural source of a number of growth factors in their natural and biologically-determined ratios.
What do Platelets do?
Platelets release growth factors which regulate the healing cascade by signaling to surrounding cells to repair damaged tissue and regenerate new tissue. Key growth factors involved in this process include but are not limited to:
- Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)
- Transforming Growth Factor group (TGF)
- Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)
- Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)
- Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF)
- Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection involves removing your own blood, then the blood is spun down to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) portion from unnecessary components in the blood. The PRP is then either injected to the scalp for hair loss or applied to the face or hands for skin rejuvenation. PRP has been used to help male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness, acne scars, wrinkles, and texture of the skin.
One needs about 4 injections with PRP to get optimal results and recovery is minimal after each injection.
